In Senator Manny Pacquiao's statement, he described the declaration of martial law in Mindanao as "timely and necessary".
"The declaration of martial law is just a temporary yet decisive measure to protect the people, to prevent any further loss of lives and to suppress lawless violence. Now is not the time for us to be divided as a nation. Let us understand that the President makes this tough decision with the welfare of the people in mind," the Senator said.
The senator made sure that there existing defense against possible abuse of power during the martial law and dismissed any fear or of the public's regarding the issues and he will wait for the President's report for the proclamation as required by the Constitution.
"I would like to allay the public’s fear regarding the situation. Our current Constitution provides adequate safeguards against possible abuses which are not available in our previous Constitution," he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte proclaimed the entire island of Mindanao under martial through the Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella while he was still in Russia. He decided to return to the country to be with his countrymen due to atrocities caused by the Maute group.
