Rhenz Abando, Anyang outlast SJ Belangel, Daegu

Rhenz Abando and the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters made a quick bounce back in the Korean Basketball League after beating Samjosef Belangel and the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation Pegasus, 91-80, on late Sunday at the Daegu Gymnasium.

Abando, a former Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights star, tallied 12 points and one rebound in almost 13 minutes of action as the defending champion Red Boosters improved to a 3-3 slate.

Seongwon Choi led the way with 20 points, Du’vaughn Maxwell and Darryl Monroe chipped in 14 markers apiece, while Jihoon Park and Jonghyun Lee each ended with 10 markers for Anyang.

Choi, who struggled offensively for the Red Boosters in their previous games, said he is confident that they can bounce back in the next round as they aim for their second consecutive crown.

“It was a game where we almost lost in a row, but I feel good because we won. I haven’t been able to contribute to the team’s victory so far, so it’s good to have my strength,” Choi said in a post-game interview.

“Before the season started, I heard a lot that our team was a candidate for last place. I was confident, and I feel like we are getting better. I think we can be in the fight for the semifinals,” he added.

Belangel struggled with just two points for the slumping Pegasus, which got 26 points from Andrew Nicholson, 12 points and 11 rebounds from Daeheon Lee, and 10 markers from Yang Junwoo.
