Seoul triumphs over Carl Tamayo, Ryukyu in EASL

Carl Tamayo and the Ryukyu Golden Kings faced an 82-69 defeat against the Seoul SK Knights in the East Asian Super League at the Goyang Sono Arena in South Korea on Wednesday night.

The former University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons forward finished with five points, seven rebounds, and one assist in 19 minutes of action as the Golden Kings dropped to 1-1 in Group B.

Golden Kings head coach Dai Oketani said it was disappointing that his players failed to take advantage of the absence of SK Knights center Jameel Warney as they suffered a lopsided loss.

“With Warney not in SK, we saw an opportunity to attack under the goal. The corner three-pointers were also good in the first quarter. “But we lost our rhythm after the second quarter,” Oketani said.

“We also have injured players. So it is difficult for players to adapt. Also, if you fall behind by about 20 points, it is difficult to catch up again.

However, I will learn from this game and do well in the next game,” he added.

In Warney’s absence, Leon Williams spearheaded the attack for the SK Knights with a double-double of 23 points and 17 rebounds, while Sunhyung Kim, Ilyoung Heo, and Sekeun Oh had 12 markers apiece.

Filipino-Italian guard Juan Gomez de Liano was not activated for the match by the 2022-23 Korean Basketball League runner-ups, the SK Knights, as they improved to a 1-1 win-loss slate.

Keita Imamura led the way for the Japan B.League titlist Golden Kings with 15 points; Allen Durham and Shota Onadera added 14 and 12 markers, respectively; and Alex Kirk and Ryuichi Kishimoto ended with 10 points each.
