Filipina fencer Sam Catantan earned herself a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning in the women’s foil event of the Asia-Oceania Zonal Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Dubai on Saturday.
Catantan pulled off a surprise against Kazakhstan’s Sofiya Aktayeva despite sustaining a knee injury midway through the match.
According to ABS-CBN News, the match was tied 13-all when the Pinay fencer took an injury timeout and was hobbling when she returned to action.
Aktayeva was still able to tie the match at 14, but Catantan came through with the last point.
Catantan becomes the first Pinay fencer to qualify for the Summer Games in 32 years.
She became the 12th member of the Philippine team to the Paris Olympics.
Other Pinoy Olympians include pole vaulter EJ Obiena; boxers Eumir Marcial, Aira Villegas, and Nesthy Petecio; gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, and Levi Ruivivar; rower Joanie Delgaco; and weightlifters John Ceniza, Elreen Ando, and Vanessa Sarno.
