Fil-Canadian Calvin Epistola becomes KBL champion with Busan

Filipino-Canadian guard Calvin Epistola is now a Korean Basketball League champion after the Busan KCC Egis prevailed over the Suwon KT Sonic Boom in their finals series recently.

In an Instagram post, Epistola expressed gratitude to his coaches, teammates, and Egis fans for their roles in Busan’s unexpected championship in the 2023-2024 KBL season.

“GOD IS GOOD!! .. Winners Win.. KBL CHAMPIONS!!” Epistola wrote. “Shoutout to everyone involved, especially all my teammates and the @kcc_egis fans, for making every playoff game feel like a home game!!”

The Egis were the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and had to defeat the Seoul SK Knights in the quarterfinals and the top-seed Wonju DB Promy in the semifinals to reach the championship round.

Epistola also struggled to find minutes with the Egis early in the season. He was even demoted to the KBL D-League before being recalled during the playoff round.

The 5-foot-11 Epistola, in his second season with the Egis, previously played for the Canadian Elite Basketball League team Scarborough before taking his talents to South Korea.

The 27-year-old Epistola is the second Filipino basketball player to win a KBL championship, following Rhenz Abando, who hoisted a crown with the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters last season.
