Christian Standhardinger defends Scottie Thompson from bashers

Christian Standhardinger hit back at Scottie Thompson’s haters, who have been criticizing the reigning PBA MVP for his lackluster performance in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Thompson averaged 1.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 2.2 turnovers during Gilas’ five-game campaign in the World Cup. The Ginebra star also averaged 12 minutes per contest. Thompson drew flak from some netizens because of these numbers.

However, Standhardinger defended Thompson from criticism. According to him, his Ginebra teammate sacrificed so much in order to be available for the World Cup.

“(Scottie Thompson) left his newborn baby and (flew) to Europe to practice twice a day, (was) always available to play for the country with no incentives needed, injured his hand in Gilas practice, rushed back to play in the World Cup, (and risked) his health,” Standhardinger wrote on his Instagram story on Monday.

“(He) didn’t fill out the stat sheets as expected, but anybody knows he brings more to the table than only stats, (yet) still criticized. Let’s celebrate our athletes instead of tearing them down,” he added.

Thompson suffered a metacarpal fracture in his shooting hand last June in the middle of Gilas’ World Cup preparations. He recovered just in time to join Gilas in the World Cup. (MJD)
