FIBA U-17 World Cup: Gilas Pilipinas boys manhandled by Spain

The Gilas Pilipinas U-17 Boys Basketball Team suffered a 96-34 defeat at the hands of Spain in the 2024 FIBA Under-17 World Cup on Sunday night (early Monday morning in Manila) at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Turkey.

The Josh Reyes-led Gilas Boys were no match against Spain, as they were held to just two points the entire opening quarter by their taller and more aggressive opponents.

Gilas Pilipinas Boys were scoreless until the 08:09 mark of the second frame, where Joaquin Ludovice and Kurt Velasquez made their inside shots to make it a 13-57 score at the half.

The No. 2 ranked Spain continued their dominance in the second half as they established the biggest lead of 96-34 on a last-second jumper by Daniel Balde.

Maximo Garcia-Plata top-scored for Spain with 15 points, Guillermo Del Pino added 14 markers, and Ignacio Campoy and Eric Del Castillo ended with 13 points apiece. They now have a 2-0 record.

Bonn Daja was the lone double-digit scorer for the No. 37-ranked Gilas Pilipinas Boys with 12 points. They dropped to 0-2 in the tournament.

Gilas Pilipinas Boys will conclude the group phase against Puerto Rico on July 2 at 8 p.m. (Manila time) at the same venue.
