Allen Liwag had a triumphant return for the Strong Group Athletics-College of St. Benilde Blazers as they defeated the MisOr Mustangs in overtime, 68-62, in the Pilipinas Super League President’s Cup on Tuesday night at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Fresh from a stint with the Strong Group Athletics-Philippines in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, Liwag made his presence felt for the Blazers with a double-double of 17 points and 22 rebounds.
“Malaking tulong para sa akin ‘yung naging experience ko sa Dubai kasi ‘yung mga kasama ko dun ibang level, and madami rin akong natutunan sa kanila na madadala ko dito sa CSB,” Liwag said.
Gab Cometa added 10 markers, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Joshua Cajucom contributed eight markers, two rebounds, and two assists as the Blazers improved to a 4-2 win-loss slate.
Down 55-58 early in overtime, the Blazers got consecutive conversions from Jhomel Ancheta, Michael Oli, Cometa, and Liwag as they established a 62-58 lead with two minutes left.
The Mustangs rallied to within 62-64 on a conversion by Reynel Hugnatan, but a basket from Ancheta and two free throws from Cometa secured the come-from-behind victory for the Blazers.
Hugnatan posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kobe Monje added 10 markers as the Mustangs dropped to 6-5 with the loss.
Meanwhile, the Alpha Omega Kings (4-8) pulled off an 81-80 escape over the Bicol Spicy Oragons (1-9). Jon Jon Gabriel led the way with a double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds.
