Samjosef Belangel played through an ankle injury to help the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation Pegasus achieve an 81-70 victory over the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters in the Korean Basketball League on Thursday night at the Daegu Gym.
The former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles guard connected on three outside shots to end up with 13 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals for the Pegasus.
Belangel was earlier deemed questionable to play against the Red Boosters after hurting his ankle during their loss to the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus last Sunday night.
Andrew Nicholson spearheaded the win with a double-double of 33 points and 10 rebounds, while Nakhyeon Kim and Seungmin Shin ended with 13 and 10, respectively, as the Pegasus moved up to 8-20 in the standings.
Pegasus acting coach Kang Hyuk lauded the all-around effort shown by his players but has called their attention to their several turnovers in the first two quarters that prevented them from pulling away from the Red Boosters.
“We won our first game of the New Year at home, so I feel better,” Kang said in a post-game interview. “However, we committed a lot of turnovers in the first half, making the game difficult.”
“We did a good job with the fast break in the second half. So there were many three-point opportunities. Above all, they had the upper hand in rebounding. The players must have had a hard time after the basketball training, but they played well,” he added.
Byeongjun Bae carried the fight for the defending champion Red Boosters with 18 points, including two triples, while Robert Carter added 10 markers. They dropped to an 11-19 slate.
