Jared Bahay is reportedly keeping his options open for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons despite receiving numerous offers, including overseas opportunities.
Dr. Rhoel Dejaño, a close friend of Bahay, mentioned that the Cebuano guard is currently deliberating on his options after receiving interest from Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
“He is not completely shutting down the possibility of playing for the Fighting Maroons in the UAAP,” Dejaño said in an interview with Cebu-based The Freeman on Friday.
“It’s true that he received various offers not only from UAAP and the NCAA but also from Australia, New Zealand, and even the United States, and that he is weighing other opportunities, but UP is not excluded from that,” he added.
Reports surfaced last week about Bahay reconsidering his commitment to UP, citing a mix of academic considerations, recent college basketball outcomes, and international offers as factors influencing his decision.
“I think decommitted is not the right word,” said Dejaño, who serves as a team doctor for the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, where Bahay played in high school.
“Bahay is just trying to lie low from basketball while thinking his options with all the pressures that had been through. For now, he wants to focus on his academics being an honor student and nothing else,” he added.
The 18-year-old Bahay, recognized as the country’s premier high school prospect, was recently honored as the CESAFI high school boys basketball MVP for leading the Magis Eagles to their third consecutive crown.
