Tyler Bey’s impactful contributions on both ends posed challenges for San Miguel in Game 4 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals on Friday.
This resulted in the Hotshots’ 96-86 win, allowing Magnolia to tie the series 2-2 against the Beermen.
Coach Chito Victolero credited Bey’s stellar defensive effort on San Miguel import Bennie Boatwright, who was held to just 16 points, his lowest this conference.
“Bey embraced that matchup vs. Bennie. He’s a very smart player; he realized he can play on both ends of the floor. But more importantly, he played defense on Boatwright. He was the one who requested that matchup,” said Victolero after the win.
Bey scattered 26 points, which is far better than his 11-point output in Game 3 when he first took on the defensive job on Boatwright.
“He played for more than 45 minutes, and he grinded both ways,” said Victolero of their prized import. “I like to credit the way he handled the pressure, plus the fact that our locals helped him. It’s a total team effort.”
Bey said he needed to answer the call, especially after they lost the first two games against San Miguel.
“I’m just stepping up to the challenge. I know (Boatwright’s) coming out aggressive each game, especially after their loss. I know I had to step up in a big way,” he said.
