UAAP fans unhappy as UP’s Malick Diouf escapes heftier punishment for punching NU’s Mark Padrones

University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons center Maodo Malick Diouf appeared to have received a lighter penalty for punching the National University Bulldogs’ Mark Padrones in a recent UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament game.

Netizens commenting on a post by Via Exis Sports argued that the reigning UAAP MVP should have been assessed a disqualifying foul instead of an unsportsmanlike foul for his solid hit to the face of Padrones.

Some also speculated that the referees might have considered calling the lighter, unsportsmanlike foul a disqualifying foul, which would result in ejection, an automatic one-game suspension, and disqualification from individual awards.

“UAAP Varsity Channel: The UAAP ano na pag-UP bulag bulagan? wow ha”

Atletiko received information from a source within the Bulldogs’ camp, revealing that Padrones suffered a nasal and orbital oral fracture on the left side of his face. He will require surgery to repair the broken bones.

Padrones was absent from the team when the Bulldogs secured an 87-69 victory over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers on Wednesday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
