UST Tiger Cubs advance to City Hoops 19-Under finals

The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs reached the finals of the City Hoops Basketball 19-Under Inter-School after a 90-85 victory over the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers in the semifinals on Sunday at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City.

Andrei Dungo spearheaded the offense with 15 points on five three-point conversions, while Joaquin Ludovice and Carl Manding contributed 13 markers apiece for the Tiger Cubs.

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Tiger Cubs slowly pulled away for a 34-24 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Junior Archers were able to cut the deficit to 41-46 at the half.

The Junior Archers pulled even closer at 53-51 in the third quarter, but the Tiger Cubs managed to create separation for a 60-54 lead, which later grew to as high as 76-61 in the final quarter.

De La Salle Zobel made its last push in the final quarter, behind the offense of Gilas Pilipinas Youth star Kieffer Alas, but they only came within five points.

Joaquin Espina led the Junior Archers with 21 points; Alas had near triple-double numbers of 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists; and Bon Daja and Charles Dimaano had 16 and 10 markers, respectively.

The Tiger Cubs will battle Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws-A in a one-game championship at eight in the morning on October 29.
