GMA: AI sportscasters won’t replace veteran journalists

GMA Network clarified on Monday that Kapuso Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated sportscasters Maia and Marco were not introduced to replace seasoned journalists.

Oliver Victor B. Amoroso, GMA Network Senior Vice and Head of Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy, stated that the use of AI reporters aims to enhance the coverage of the NCAA games.

“Maia and Marco are AI presenters; they are not journalists, and they can never replace our seasoned broadcasters and colleagues who are the lifeblood of our organization,” Amoroso said in a statement posted on the GMA News website.

“We are now living in the age of AI, and other major news organizations worldwide are already using this as a tool to improve their operations. As the leading news organization in the Philippines, we will constantly look for ways to hone our craft while preserving the value of our human assets and the integrity of our reporting,” he added.

Amoroso further emphasized that the special participation of Maia and Marco in the NCAA coverage was “to complement, not replace, the human aspect of our coverage.”

Ramil Escarda, NMI Studios Head of Creatives, on the other hand, said that the creation of AI sportscasters aims to serve as an innovative platform for presenting information to the viewer.

“Finding creative ways to deliver news and tell compelling stories is the driving force behind GMA Network’s digital transformation and future-proofing efforts,” Escarda said.
Maia and Marco, introduced at the beginning of NCAA Season 99 last Sunday, ignited discussions about AI technology, leading to a variety of opinions being shared on social media.

Certain netizens, including communication students, voiced apprehension about the technology, fearing it might displace human broadcasters.
